646f9e108c Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, aka OSS 117, is the French spy considered by his superiors to be the best in the business. The year is 1967 - he's been sent on a mission to Rio de Janeiro, to find a former high-ranking Nazi who went into exile in South America after the war. His eventful investigation takes him all across Brazil, from Rio to Brasilia and the Iguazu Falls, accompanied by a charming Mossad agent who is also looking for the Nazi. The man is charming, and so is the young woman. Set to the strains of bossa nova, their tale is by turns an adventure and a love story. Although I was pleasantly surprised by the previous OSS movie ; this sequel is just terrible. The story lacks rhythm and logic. Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath in the first movie was a caricature of the conservative Frenchman of the 50s : racist, sexist, arrogant… However, these traits were not emphasize so much as in the sequel and he had charisma.In Rio ne répond plus, he is just a one dimensional obnoxious a**hole. The other characters are simply useless (especially Dolores ; I cannot even blame the actress for her performance, as the character lacks personality). As for humor, I did laugh a few times, but not as much as I was hoping. French cinema at its worth. Same review for both OSS 117 films. <br/><br/>They are both brilliant farces featuring an idiot savant, culturally clueless, racially and sexually insensitive, French super spy back in the days in which France was still a significant world and colonial power. <br/><br/>These films are filled with both laugh out loud and more subtle humor. They are the opposite of the crude and hilarious Spanish Torrente films, but just as highly recommended in their own way. The second film in the series is cruder and less subtle than the first, but it is still really good. The look of the reference-heavy film, mostly shot on location in Brazil, is impeccably cheesy, but the Nazi humor and awkward sexist and racist eruptions smell a little stale. And yet, given time, the film develops an energy all its own.
